This magazine advert is for Rihanna's album Rated R, released in 2009. The advertisement is in black and white suggesting Rihanna's unique but dark style. This links in with the name of the album as R Rated movies tend to have more drugs, gore, nudity and controversial topics.
The image of Rihanna shows the artist with a serious expression reflecting the serious nature of the album and is therefore reflected in the colour scheme. The outfit Rihanna is wearing also represents the "Rated R" theme, with dark lipstick and leather which can suggest a fetish theme.
The ragged appearance of the bottom half of the magazine advert continues to back-up the idea of dark style. Rihanna's name is highlight by the block styled writing which reminds you of the writing used on mug-shots. Similary to Ellie Goulding's magazine advert, Rihanna's name is in a bigger font than the font used for the name of the album, suggesting that the promotion of Rihanna as an artist is primarily more important
The only colour used in this advertisement is for the two song names that are featured on the album. The fact that this is red could represent blood, inkeeping with the theme throughout this advert.
